After scripting minor-classic ’80s horror flicks like The Hitcher and Near Dark, Eric Red turned auteur. So far, he has spent the ’90s floundering as a writer-director of intelligent but fatally flawed genre films. This werewolf movie, based on Wayne Smith’s novel Thor, features nice performances by Hemingway as a single mom and Pare as her lycanthropic visiting brother. Unfortunately, the film focuses on an annoying little kid and a big dog with all the good-heartedness of Old Yeller. The morphing effects also look pretty low-budget, which leaves werewolf aficionados to settle for the occasional Red flash of talent. C
