The Mont Blanc pen made headlines this week

INK SPOT It may be the most sought-after writing instrument since Seinfeld’s Jerry coveted the astronaut pen. The Mont Blanc, that classic $425 black fountain pen with the snowcap top, has made cameos on at least eight TV shows this season, including Murphy Brown and The Single Guy. Mont Blancs will also make their mark in several films, including Devil’s Advocate, with Al Pacino, and Contact, starring Jodie Foster (the latter production ordered 55 and will give them an on-screen credit). So why are the classy quills in so many scripts? ”The Mont Blanc pen is the fantasy object of desire for [writers],” says NYPD Blue producer Theresa Rebeck, who penned a recent episode about a junkie who steals a Mont Blanc from her father. Mont Blanc CEO Fred Reffsin, whose dream is to get a pen in the hands of The X-Files’ Mulder and Scully, says the company doesn’t grant every request it gets. Reffsin says he would draw the line at ”nonwriting” uses of the Mont Blanc, such as when John Cusack’s Grosse Pointe Blank character offs a hitman with a pen to the jugular: ”If somebody says, ‘We want to use it as a murder weapon,’ we wouldn’t do it.”
