Should’ve been titled the grumpy Old Men and the Sea. Lemmon and Matthau do their usual love-hate shtick (it’s their 10th film together and they begin shooting an update of The Odd Couple next month), this time masquerading as dance partners on a senior citizen cruise ship. The joke is that Lemmon can dance and Matthau, well, let him describe it: ”I did a little dance in Grumpier Old Men after I laid Sophia Loren and it got a big laugh,” he says, ”so apparently I’m pretty funny to watch.” Lemmon had the harder part: ”I had about a month of dance rehearsals,” he says. ”And Walter, that SOB, didn’t have any. But it is hysterical to watch him on the dance floor. He has no idea what to do.” UPSIDE The chemistry works: The two Old Men flicks made $141 million domestically. DOWNSIDE Then again, are their oars sturdy enough to brave summer waters?
