”The history of television has become the history of America,” writes Steven D. Stark at the beginning of this decade-by-decade examination of life on the small screen from 1947 to the present, Glued to the Set: The 60 Television Shows and Events That Made Us Who We Are Today. He’s talking about how the quiz-show scandals eroded our faith, how Archie Bunker heralded the demise of ’60s liberalism, and how Dallas recognized the Reagan era before there even was one. Although calling America’s Funniest Home Videos ”democracy in action” may be a little over the top, this is often a fascinating look at the relationship between the viewing public and its entertainment staple.
