Dead Silence

Genre: Mystery and Thriller; Starring: Kim Coates, Lolita Davidovich, James Garner, Marlee Matlin; MPAA Rating: R

It takes grace to age well in Hollywood. Kirk Douglas has it. Marlon Brando doesn’t. The trick lies in knowing how to choose your projects. Director of Dead Silence Daniel Petrie Jr. (Toy Soldiers) posits James Garner as the FBI’s point man during a hostage crisis in which a trio of bandidos hole up in an abandoned slaughterhouse with a busload of deaf students and their pretty, witty teacher (Marlee Matlin). After a good setup and a taut second act, Dead Silence’s only letdown is a finale that seems lifted from, well, The Rockford Files. B
