RECOVERING On Aug. 15, singer Neil Diamond, 56, underwent preventive surgery to remove precancerous polyps in his large intestine, at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in L.A. ”He’s cancer free,” says a spokeswoman, adding that Diamond ”is doing extraordinarily well” and preparing for a December tour.
LAWSUITS Actor Mickey Rourke, 43, filed a breach-of-contract and fraud suit against White Hawk Pictures, Aug. 27, in L.A. According to court papers, White Hawk broke an agreement to pay Rourke $1.08 million for work on its upcoming production The Flying Dutchman. White Hawk had no comment…. Actor Jan-Michael Vincent, 53, filed suit in Orange County, Calif., Aug. 26 against two paramedics whom Vincent says damaged his vocal cords while treating him after a drunk-driving accident in August 1996. In court papers, Vincent, who allegedly suffered partial paralysis of his vocal cords from a tube placed down his throat, claims the injury has hampered his ability to get acting jobs. An Orange County Fire Authority spokesman had no comment…. On Aug. 25 a Pasadena federal appeals court upheld an October 1995 lower-court decision and ordered the National Enquirer to pay Clint Eastwood, 67, $150,000 in damages for publishing a fake interview with the actor in 1993. According to the ruling, the interview gave the erroneous impression that Eastwood was ”washed-up as a movie star…courting publicity in a sensationalist tabloid.” Eastwood had sought $15 million…. On Aug. 22, four weeks after romance novelist Janet Dailey admitted to plagiarizing the work of fellow novelist Nora Roberts, Roberts filed a copyright infringement suit against Dailey in New York City. In court papers, Roberts cites over 70 examples of plagiarism and seeks $75,000 in damages as well as a recall of Dailey’s novels Notorious and Aspen Gold. A Dailey spokesman had no comment.
SPLITS Model Christy Turlington, 28, ended her partnership with the Fashion Cafe restaurant chain Aug. 26 ”due to scheduling conflicts,” according to a joint statement. The first cafe opened in April 1995 with Naomi Campbell, Elle Macpherson, and Claudia Schiffer as spokespeople. (The models have no ownership in the chain but receive fees for promoting it.) Turlington joined in July 1995 but has been conspicuously absent from cafe events this year. A spokesperson for the chain refused to comment.
