Beatles wannabees and ''The Sixth Sense'' made movie news the week of October 3, 1997

WANNABEATLES Thirty-three years after the Beatles parodied their own fame in A Hard Day’s Night, two of ‘97’s pop phenoms are using the Fab film classic as a model for their movie debuts. The Spice Girls’ comedy Spice World is due this winter. And Hanson have just entered development on their own Hard Day’s knockoff. The Hanson project ”is not a biopic,” emphasizes Morgan J. Freeman — writer-director of the Sundance-winning drama Hurricane Streets, who’s been hired to script — ”but something true to their reality right now, while keeping it tongue-in-cheek.” As long as he doesn’t follow the approach of the last overnight pop sensation to make a movie: Vanilla Ice.

FURTHERMORE In one of the largest spec-script deals ever, Hollywood Pictures paid $2.5 million for Sixth Sense, by 27-year-old writer-director M. Night Shyamalan. His Wide Awake, starring Rosie O’Donnell, opens Oct. 17…. Fox 2000 has shelled out an estimated $3 million for the rights to The Cobra Event, the first novel by Crisis in the Hot Zone author Richard Preston.
