Riot in the Streets

Genre: Disaster; Starring: Luke Perry, Mario Van Peebles; MPAA Rating: R

Until the stars finally appear (Perry after 40 minutes and Van Peebles nearly half an hour later), you’ll probably have forgotten they were cast in this gripping tale of the day in 1992 that riots erupted in Los Angeles after the Rodney King verdict. Four stories gradually interweave until the characters — Asian-American shop owners, a Latino family, a white police officer, and an African-American family — are thrown together just as the streets combust. Documentary footage of the mayhem makes Riot (as it was known when it aired on Showtime) a little too real, but the film wins points for showing all sides of a disturbing piece of recent history. B-
