Night Falls On Manhattan

Starring: Dominic Chianese, Andy Garcia, Ian Holm, Lena Olin; Starring: Richard Dreyfuss, James Gandolfini; Director: Sidney Lumet; Release Date Limited: 05/16/1997

Buried by the early summer releases, Sidney Lumet’s latest tale of cop corruption made little noise. But renters catching up with it now may be surprised by its power. Garcia generates Pacino-like heat as a prosecutor whose ideals hit the wall when a crackdown on crooked NYPD officers implicates his father (Holm). Based on Robert Daley’s novel Tainted Evidence, the film has its improbabilities, but once Lumet hunkers into the shadows of moral compromise, the director of Serpico and Prince of the City delivers the goods.
