'World' Beater

This week on the music charts

Today Harlem, tomorrow the world? Why not both at once, figured Mase, the 19-year-old Puff Daddy protégé who debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 with his first album. Having used guest raps on tracks by Biggie, Mariah, and figurative papa Puffy as a stepping-stone to stardom, Mase sold a remarkable 272,000 first-week copies of Harlem World. At least as surprising, the Dave Matthews Band proved that not all concert albums need be sales bummers, as their Red Rocks set entered at No. 3 with lively sales of 103,000. On a reverse course, Janet Jackson’s Velvet Rope fell out of the top 10 after a scant three-week run.
