From Warren Beatty to waterbeds, microminis to Marilyn Chambers, hundreds of sex-related artifacts from the ’60s and ’70s are compiled in Jack Boulware’s Sex, American Style: An Illustrated Romp through the Golden Age of Heterosexuality, a titillating history of the sexual revolution. And, yes, much of that most unsubtle of movements—with its nudist colonies, its How to Pick Up Girls, its partner-swapping parties—looks pretty silly today. But Boulware, cheekily celebrating even tube tops and Charo—without which, he argues, ”this country would be even more repressed”—successfully captures the era’s heady, tawdry spirit. B
