HUNGRY Joanna Torrey (Crown, $21) This aptly titled story collection is a mouthwatering treat. Torrey’s antiheroines include an exotic dancer who jousts with her therapist, a gourmand whose sexual promiscuity is linked to her passion for exotic food, and a woman whose love of back rubs is rooted in her incestuous relationship with her father. Torrey’s novella — a secretary’s intriguingly complex taxonomy of a law office — is far too long, and some of these stories have maliciously ambiguous endings. Still, on the evidence of this impressive debut, Torrey, who currently works as a legal secretary, should have no qualms about quitting her day job. A-
