Buffy the Vampire Slayer (69th) kissed high school goodbye with a long-awaited season finale that staked out a healthy 6.5 million viewers. What’s more, the female-friendly WB drama nabbed its highest ratings to date in men 18 to 49, despite airing opposite baseball’s All-Star Game (1st). While still a home run, Fox’s coverage of that event fell 1.4 million viewers short of last year’s broadcast on NBC. Speaking of drop-offs, The WB’s Movie Stars (93rd) lost 1.1 million viewers its second week out, but that was nothing compared with UPN’s sci-fi stinker Mercy Point (116th, 117th). Not only did a pair of back-to-back Points finish dead last in the ratings, they handed the beleaguered netlet its lowest-rated night in its four-and-a-half-year history.
