MOVIE TITLE/RATING

THE IRON GIANT/PG

IN A NUTSHELL

During the Atomic Age ’50s, freckle-faced Hogarth befriends a huge, mysterious robot who the government believes is threatening Americans.

WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?

Younger kids will because it’s animated, but older ones may prefer ‘toons with name recognition.

SEX/NUDITY

None

DRUGS/ALCOHOL

None

VIOLENCE/SCARINESS

Soldiers shoot at Hogarth and the giant; a near electrocution; hunters kill a deer.

OBJECTIONABLE WORDS/PHRASES

Nothing to worry about

THE VERDICT

This is a different breed of cartoon – smart, thought-provoking – and you’ll probably like it a lot more than your children will.

THE SIXTH SENSE/PG-13

[IN A NUTSHELL]

Child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is forced to deal with his own ghosts as he tries to help 9-year-old Cole (Haley Joel Osment) cope with horrific visions of dead people.

[WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?]

They might because of Willis, but this is not an action flick, and that could turn a lot of kids off.

[SEX/NUDITY]

A foggy silhouette of Malcolm’s wife (Olivia Williams) in the shower

[DRUGS/ALCOHOL]

Malcolm and his wife have some wine.

[VIOLENCE/SCARINESS]

A man shoots Malcolm and then kills himself; Cole’s gory apparitions; a murderous mom

[OBJECTIONABLE WORDS/PHRASES]

A profanity or two

[THE VERDICT]

Malcolm’s and Cole’s strong family ties ultimately help them through their problems, sending an important message to teen viewers.

DETROIT ROCK CITY/R

[IN A NUTSHELL]

High schoolers Hawk (Edward Furlong), Lex (Giuseppe Andrews), Trip (James DeBello), and Jam (Sam Huntington) desperately try to snag tickets for a Kiss concert.

[WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?]

Yes. It’s got those three timeless themes that appeal to teens – sex, drugs, and rock & roll.

[SEX/NUDITY]

Topless women; Jam has sex in a confessional; Hawk strips at a club and has sex in a car.

[DRUGS/ALCOHOL]

Pot smoking; a priest’s pizza is spiked with drugs.

[VIOLENCE/SCARINESS]

A robbery at gunpoint; a disco king gets kneed in the groin; Trip gets beaten up.

[OBJECTIONABLE WORDS/PHRASES]

Every other word or phrase out of these guys’ mouths

[THE VERDICT]

If it was okay for you to do this stuff 20 years ago, it’s hard to argue against your teens just watching it; but the film’s constant Catholic bashing is a bit much.

BOWFINGER/PG-13

[IN A NUTSHELL]

Low-rent director Bobby Bowfinger (Steve Martin) goes to great lengths to snag elusive superstar Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy) for his new sci-fi movie.

[WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?]

Yes. Martin and Murphy are a can’t-miss team, especially with Murphy in dual roles.

[SEX/NUDITY]

An aspiring actress removes her shirt and sleeps around; Kit flashes the Laker Girls.

[DRUGS/ALCOHOL]

Some wine and celebratory drinks

[VIOLENCE/SCARINESS]

None, but tell your kids not to mimic the dangerous freeway-crossing stunt.

[OBJECTIONABLE WORDS/PHRASES]

A few dozen mild expletives

[THE VERDICT]

Although Bowfinger’s tenacity is admirable, his methods for success – lying and cheating – make him a poor role model.

MYSTERY MEN/PG-13

[IN A NUTSHELL]

When a superhero goes missing, an unlikely group of wannabes (including Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo) do battle with a villain who’s set on destroying Champion City.

[WILL KIDS WANT TO SEE IT?]

They might, given the hip cast, but the film may lack broad appeal since its source material is pretty obscure.

[SEX/NUDITY]

A topless mannequin; a nude Invisible Boy (Kel Mitchell) covers his private parts.

[DRUGS/ALCOHOL]

The good guys and the bad guys have a few drinks.

[VIOLENCE/SCARINESS]

Mostly of the ”Wham! Bam! Ouch!” variety, but one character does get fried.

[OBJECTIONABLE WORDS/PHRASES]

A sprinkling of profanity

[THE VERDICT]

The heroes promote an antigun agenda; even their armorer (Tom Waits) refuses to make weapons that are lethal.
