Lead Performer: Marshall Crenshaw; Producer (group): Razor & Tie

Marshall Crenshaw is a glowing example of the way you can sustain an artistic career by turning obsessions — in his case, ’60s guitar-chord progressions and hurt-puppy love themes — into healthy nourishment. While #447 is dominated by his rigorous pop-rock, he also takes excursions into Latin rhythms and florid instrumentals. Such experiments may alienate fans, but this is Crenshaw for Y2K, a summation of his many strengths and remarkably few weaknesses. My advice: Keep listening — it only gets deeper, richer, and more enjoyable.
