Lovers of the Arctic Circle

Genre: Foreign Language; Starring: Fele Martínez, Najwa Nimri; Director: Julio Medem; Author: Julio Medem; Release Date Limited: 04/09/1999; Runtime (in minutes): 112; MPAA Rating: R; Distributor: Fine Line Features

Otto and Ana, in love since they were eight, both have palindromic names. Mere coincidence? Director Julio Medem says no and makes a grand case for the Big F, Fate, in this strikingly elegant Spanish fable. Now grown, Otto, a messenger pilot, is separated from Ana, and it’s just a matter of time before the lovers are reunited. Geographically their ”circle” meets in the land of the midnight sun, but metaphysically it ends on destiny’s doorstep.

Reel goodies

(0:31) A teenage Otto climbs through Ana’s window in the dead of night to explore his erotic urges.

The last detail

1993’s ”Map of the Human Heart” is eerily similar: An Arctic pilot and his lifelong love are reunited despite mad improbabilities. Just happenstance?
