Kohl's infectious jingle--Angela McCluskey has a ''commercial'' hit with ''That's More Like It''

Cross ”The Softer Side of Sears” with Natalie Merchant and you get ”That’s More Like It,” the infectious jingle featured in TV and radio ads for the Wisconsin-based Kohl’s department store’s entry into East Coast markets. The voice belongs to Angela McCluskey, 35, a Scottish-born singer with four albums under her belt, three with her band the Wild Colonials. Though McCluskey’s recorded over 20 movie soundtracks (Brokedown Palace) and toured with the original Lilith Fair, she was a relative unknown to JSM Music, the jingle company responsible for hiring her. ”She was kind of a wild card because of her accent,” says JSM president Joel Simon. McCluskey managed to mask her burr, and now Kohl’s execs are fielding calls and e-mails galore about the commercials. ”I’m quite shocked,” McCluskey says about all the attention coming from this one ditty. Then again, ”If people like the voice,” she reasons, ”then they can go buy [my] album.”
