The Wall Street Journal thinks it’s pretty sneaky, with its rumored poll asking Academy members to reveal their Oscar choices. (The Academy has officially decried the poll, and results have yet to be published.) In the interest of fairness, we at EW turned the tables and queried Journal staffers about their March 26 picks. Wouldn’t you know, most reporters were tight-lipped. But from those who answered, the biggest shocker was a dead heat for Best Director, between long shots M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense) and Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich). Other results were more predictable: American Beauty claimed Best Picture, Kevin Spacey Best Actor, and Hilary Swank of Boys Don’t Cry Best Actress.
