There’s some of ”A Simple Plan”’s crazy inevitability to the chain reaction of outrageous mishaps that pop and crackle in the Japanese comedy Adrenaline Drive. But in this clever, laid-back road picture, the consequences of clinging to found money are nothing but zany.
Hikari Ishida and Masanobu Ando play a mousy car driver and a shy nurse who come into possession of millions of yen notes belonging to a yakuza bigwig (Yutaka Matsushige). And not only does the Mob boss chase them, but a gang of junior thugs — played by the Japanese comedy troupe Jovi Jova — is also angling to grab the loot.
Director Shinobu Yaguchi tempers his fondness for situational deadpan and less-than-tourist-friendly settings with a real affection for his sad-sack characters. But he also never protects them from screwing up, nor does he teach them, or us, any lessons. He just follows the money. Which, as Deep Throat explained, is where things get interesting.
