We gave it a B+

Most modern music comes from no place special; it seems to hail from the universal strip mall of pop. Not so for the North Mississippi All Stars. The rich dirt of delta blues reverberates in every slip of their slide guitars. Twentysomething brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson (spawn of famed roots producer Jim Dickinson) formed the band with friend Chris Chew and honed their sound in the region of Fred McDowell. Their credible debut, Shakes Hands with Shorty, wouldn’t seem so striking in the ’60s, when such sounds ruled. But now these retro blues sound utterly new. B+
