There’s plenty of self-conscious theatrical ”invention” on display but not a feather’s worth of fun to be had in Lion King director Julie Taymor’s The Green Bird, an overdecorated adaptation of a Carlo Gozzi fable about two orphans, a magic bird, and a kingdom full of leaden whimsy. Artlessly contemporizing the material with dusty pop-culture shtick (”You talkin’ to me?” etc.), Taymor treats her talented cast as puppets, smothering them under masks that thwart their efforts at comedy at every turn. C-
