Observing her performance of both mundane tasks and desperate acts, sibling directors Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne wield an intimately handheld camera, and yet maintain an emotional distance. Their film (which won the 1999 Palme d’Or at Cannes) makes no judgments, jerks no tears. It’s an excitingly rigorous work of art. A
