Whatever It Takes

Genre: Comedy; Starring: James Franco, Marla Sokoloff, Shane West; Director: David Raynr; Author: Mark Schwahn; Runtime (in minutes): 92; Distributor: Columbia Pictures

Shakespeare and Austen having already been co-opted by teen comedies, it was only a matter of time before Edmond Rostand got a turn. And in the Cyrano de Bergerac variation Whatever It Takes, doltish BMOC James Franco and bookish nice guy West (TV’s Once and Again) help each other woo cutie-pie Sokoloff and sexpot Jodi Lyn O’Keefe. Pleasant enough, though a bit bland and hackneyed, the comedy is worth a peek if only to see West crank out ”Play That Funky Music” on the accordion. C+
