Big-band jazz is still a male-dominated world, but by pushing the tradition forward and finding fresh expressive possibilities, the Maria Schneider Orchestra continues to be one of the best ”men” for the job. On Allegresse, the latest collection with her regular, beautifully calibrated ensemble, she again displays her signature sophistication in the writing, savors sensuous textures, and shows an abiding, probing intelligence. Not your father’s big-band music. B+
