Greek Fire: The Story of Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis

Genre: Nonfiction; Author: Nicholas Gage; Publisher: Knopf

The gossip, rumors, and secrets surrounding the tempestuous 15-year affair between opera diva Maria Callas and shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis may not, in the grand scheme of things, warrant the serious investigative reporting that former New York Times correspondent Nicholas Gage brings to it in Greek Fire. That said, it makes for an undeniably absorbing read. Rendered in opulent detail is the fateful 1959 Mediterranean cruise aboard Onassis’ 325-foot yacht, Christina, on which the two world-famous Greeks, with spouses in tow, fell scandalously in love. Gage sets the record straight about the abortion Onassis supposedly forced Callas to have and presents new information about their short-lived love child. Right through Onassis’ abrupt, ultimately miserable marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968, Gage’s theatrical storytelling makes Greek Fire a steamy, satisfying guilty pleasure. B
