In dog-eat-dog Hollywood, the newest It pooch is a five-pound Ubermutt with a curiously comical expression. Mr. Winkle hit it big when his two-month-old website (www.mrwinkle.com), initially set up to sell a calendar, became a word-of-mouth phenom from California to Croatia. (In October alone, the site received some 2 million hits.) Photographer Lara Jo Regan, the site’s creator (and Mr. Winkle’s owner), has booked the canine on CNN and on CBS’s The Early Show, among others, and she’s in talks about a Mr. Winkle cartoon TV series and a line of stuffed toys. ”I’m on this obsessive mission to share him with the world,” says Regan. At a recent celeb fashion show in L.A. to benefit Actors and Others for Animals, a gushing Jaclyn Smith told EW: ”I’ve seen Mr. Winkle on TV. I can’t believe I’m carrying him!” Talent agent Jamie Persky of L.A.’s Meridian Artists Agency thinks she knows why Tinseltown has such a case of puppy love: ”Mr. Winkle’s got a Tom Hanks quality.”
