Creature Comforts

Genre: Animation; Director: Nick Park; Runtime (in minutes): 35; MPAA Rating: Unrated

If you’ve never talked to the animals, you don’t know what you’ve been missing. Apparently they’re filled with the same cranky insecurities as we are, if you’re to believe the critters of Creature Comforts, Nick Park’s Oscar-winning claymation short. Far less refined than Wallace and Gromit or Chicken Run, two other gems from the gents of Britain’s Aardman Animations, Comforts unspools from the vantage point of an interviewer quizzing zoo ”inmates” about their living conditions. The answers — recorded during sessions with, among others, an exchange student living in a dorm and a nursing-home resident — are as somber as they are funny. Also on this DVD are three other shorts — the Oscar-nominated Wat’s Pig; the afterlife odyssey Not Without My Handbag; and the existential Adam — but if you’re tempted to buy this disc, it’s Comforts that’ll push you over the edge. Even though the DVD doesn’t include any goodies, and the short is only five minutes long, you’ll be happy you shelled out the 10 bucks. B+
