HIT AHOY!

Tom Hanks washed up onto this week’s no. 1 spot and drifted within sight of his own personal high-water mark. Striking like a tsunami, Cast Away earned $39.9 million over the long Christmas weekend; the movie’s three-day total of $28.9 million nearly rose to the level of Hanks’ best live-action opening ($30.6 million for Saving Private Ryan). In the battle for runner-up, more women appear to want Mel Gibson. After owning the previous weekend, his What Women Want earned a brawny $21.6 million in frame two, while Nicolas Cage’s The Family Man opened with a less muscular $15.1 million. Screen for screen, the mightiest movie of all was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Playing at only 143 venues, Ang Lee’s martial-arts epic kicked into the top 10 with a knockout $25,843 per-site average.
