Talk about spheres of influence. Consider the fortunes of Wilson, Tom Hanks‘ well-rounded Cast Away costar. Last month, the red-faced volleyball bounced away with the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s award for best inanimate object. (Didn’t anyone see Sylvester Stallone in Get Carter?) Then one of three Wilsons fetched $18,400 in an online auction by 20th Century Fox. Future film roles for the global phenom will have to wait, but store appearances may be in the works. ”We’re considering licensing Wilson’s face for a limited-edition ball as a gift with purchase of the video or DVD,” says Wilson Sporting Goods’ Alan Davenport. But is he ready for fame? Brooke Shields, whose career was spiked when she played a castaway in The Blue Lagoon, warns: ”I’ve seen Hollywood destroy stars who rise that quickly, so don’t get overly inflated.”
