WRITERS Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow DIRECTOR Stephen Hopkins PLOT On the day of the California presidential primary, we meet Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), head of the CIA’s L.A. counterterrorist unit (CTU). He’s trying to save his marriage to Teri (Leslie Hope, above, with Sutherland) after having an affair with coworker Nina Myers (Sarah Clarke). That night, he discovers that his daughter, Kim (Elisha Cuthbert), has snuck out to meet her bad-girl buddy, Janet (Jacqui Maxwell), and two scruffy older boys. Jack then gets called in to work, where he learns of an imminent assassination attempt on Sen. David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), the nation’s first viable black presidential candidate. A rogue CIA agent may be involved….Out in the Valley, Kim and Janet hang with Dan (Matthew Carey) and Rick (Daniel Bess), but when the party’s over, the boys refuse to take them home and instead drive off into the night. A frantic Teri receives a call from a man identifying himself as Janet’s dad, Alan York (Richard Burgi), and the two hit the road in search of the girls….Meanwhile, aboard an L.A.-bound plane, photographer Martin Belkin (Rudolf Martin), who’s heading to meet Palmer, befriends a curvy stranger, Mandy (Mia Kirshner). The two engage in a high-altitude hookup, and she steals Belkin’s press credentials. After activating a detonator, Mandy parachutes from the plane as it explodes….Back at CTU, agent George Mason (Xander Berkeley) gives Jack a disc containing info on the Palmer hit. When Mason won’t reveal his source, Jack knocks him out and digs up some embezzlement-related dirt on his coworker. Blackmail ensues, and Mason sings…off screen.

WRITERS Surnow and Michael Loceff DIRECTOR Hopkins PLOT Mandy lands and, after burying Belkin’s ID, leaves with Ira Gaines (Michael Massee). A biker chick appears at the scene, unearths the credentials, and follows….Jack’s director, Richard Walsh (Michael O’Neill), calls: He’s been shot while retrieving a keycard from agent Scott Baylor containing info on the Palmer hit. Jack arrives and severs the finger of one of the dead shooters. A dying Walsh tells Jack, ”Match [the card] to a computer, find the computer, you’ve got the dirty agent.” Turns out it’s Nina’s card!…Teri and Alan find Janet’s car at a furniture store parking lot. In the van, Dan drugs Janet and orders Kim to call her mom and say she’s okay….The Secret Service arrives at Palmer’s HQ, but the candidate (pictured) is en route to a mystery meeting.

WRITERS Surnow and Loceff DIRECTOR Hopkins PLOT CTU computer whiz Jamey (Karina Arroyave) discovers the keycard was programmed on Jan. 14. When Jack confronts Nina, she reminds him that they were away together that weekend. Growing increasingly suspicious of Jack, agent Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) calls Mason to alert him to Bauer’s actions….Biker chick demands more money from Gaines for Belkin’s ID. He agrees, then has her shot….Kim and Janet’s escape attempt (above) is thwarted when Janet is hit by a car; Gaines summons Dan and Rick….Palmer meets with campaign operative Carl (Zach Grenier) to say that newswoman Maureen Kingsley (Devika Parikh) called; she knows Palmer’s son, Keith (Vicellous Shannon), was involved in the death of Lyle Gibson, his sister Nicole’s rapist, seven years ago. Carl vows to ”take care of it.”
