AGE BEFORE BEAUTY

Let’s hear it for the geezers. With a staggering 70 percent of its audience in the 25-and-over age bracket, Mel Gibson’s blood-soaked Vietnam epic, We Were Soldiers, drubbed Josh Hartnett’s Clearasil crowd-pleaser 40 Days and 40 Nights. Soldiers’ opening salvo proved two things: that folks are not tired of war flicks (Bruce Willis’ Hart’s War may have slipped to No. 20, but Black Hawk Down continued to hold); and that the aging Gibson remains a fountain of loot. Hartnett seduced a respectable $12.2 million with 40 Days, but that number begins to look a tad flaccid considering that some industry prognosticators had predicted a more priapic $15 to $20 million bow.
