We gave it an A-

The Dead have never been great Dylan interpreters. They’re too laid-back to capture his vocal intensity, too loose to nurture his melodic genius. Still, this collection of live Dylan covers is so obviously the work of true fans that it’s hard not to enjoy hearing the band enjoying themselves play them. For more Dead-on listening, however, check out the latest installment of the archival ”Dick’s Picks” series, recorded at San Francisco’s Cow Palace in early 1974. It’s a good show from a great year, boasting a strong mix of favorite tunes and inspired improvisation. And, it’s worth noting, no Dylan covers. Postcards: B; Vol. 24: A-
