Most of the buzz around writer-directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s suspense film centered on Swinton’s superb performance as an overprotective mother who’ll do anything to help her teenage son (Jonathan Tucker). Indeed, it’s probably the best performance of 2001 that wasn’t nominated for an Oscar. But the film has other selling points: a plot that veers off in unexpected directions, a smoldering turn by ER’s Visnjic as a sympathetic blackmailer, strikingly watery cinematography by Giles Nuttgens, gorgeous Lake Tahoe settings, and a climax highlighted by a memorable close-up. What The Deep End lacks in big jolts, it makes up for with plenty of little surprises. A-
