Former tennis star John McEnroe boosted his performance with steroids while playing professionally, his ex-wife, actress Tatum O’Neal, tells ”20/20,” according to the Associated Press. ”I made him stop because he was becoming violent,” O’Neal told the news program, in an interview responding to McEnroe’s new autobiography, ”You Cannot Be Serious.”

O’Neal also alleged that McEnroe, who now works as a TV commentator, used marijuana and cocaine, but only away from the court. ”I’m very disappointed in Tatum’s statements,” McEnroe said in a statement released to AP by his agent. ” I had hoped that after all these years she would see things more accurately and that she would share my concern for the welfare of our children.” McEnroe and O’Neal ended their marriage in 1992; he married singer Patty Smyth in 1997.
