The race for the Moonmen is on. MTV announced on Monday the nominees for the 19th annual Video Music Awards. Leading the race for the astronaut trophies are Eminem, P.O.D., and Missy Elliott, with six nominations apiece. Eminem is also one of three performers announced so far for the Aug. 29 ceremony, along with Pink and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Eminem and P.O.D. are both up for the evening’s top honor, Best Video of the Year, where they’ll face off against ‘N Sync, Linkin Park, the White Stripes, and Nas. Both are also up for the Viewer’s Choice award, against such populist performers as Brandy, Enrique Iglesias, Michelle Branch, and B2K. Elliott’s ”One Minute Man” is up for Best Hip-Hop Video and five technical awards.

Others who might make multiple trips to the podium include Ashanti (up for five awards, including two for her guest work with Ja Rule and Fat Joe); Shakira and the White Stripes (four nods apiece); and ‘N Sync and Linkin Park (up for three awards each).
