THE CHARTS

HIGH ‘Q.’ The John Q. public was out in force this week, giving Denzel Washington’s medical drama a chart-topping debut. Although the film–which stars Washington as a father driven to desperate measures when his son is denied treatment–received a critical drubbing in theaters, both VHS renters and DVD buyers gave it their stamp of approval. Displacing the heft of previous chart-topper Shallow Hal to No. 2, John Q. proved it was anything but DOA.
