Billy Joel was hospitalized Saturday night after slamming his Mercedes into a tree in Sag Harbor, N.Y., but he was released Sunday morning. ”There was no alcohol involved,” his spokeswoman told the New York Daily News. ”He had an accident on a bad stretch of road.”
The 53-year-old singer hit the tree in the Hamptons resort community at around 10:30 on Saturday night, the New York Post reports. ”That tree is hit so many times,” nearby homeowner Winthrop Barrett told the Post. ”Coming off this hill, it’s a very dangerous curve. They call it ÔDead Man’s Curve.”’ Firemen used the Jaws of Life to free Joel, who was then airlifted to the University Hospital at Stony Brook. Thanks to his seat belt and airbags, Joel apparently suffered no more than facial cuts and was discharged early Sunday.
This is Joel’s second single-car accident in seven months. After last June’s crash, in nearby Easthampton, where he lives, Joel spent 10 days at the Silver Hill clinic in Connecticut for alcohol rehab. On Saturday, however, ”there was no indication of drugs or alcohol,” Sag Harbor Police detective Paul Fabiano told the Daily News. No breathalyzer test was administered, though a source told the Post that Joel’s blood was tested at the hospital and came back negative for alcohol.
