''Cody Banks'' loses to the ''House'' at the box office. The kiddie CIA-comedy gets released to a second-place opening

Steve Martin and Queen Latifah held off upstart Frankie Muniz at the box office this weekend, as “Bringing Down the House” topped “Agent Cody Banks.”

“House” earned another $22.4 million this weekend, according to studio estimates. That’s down only 28 percent from its $31.1 million debut last week, a much better dropoff than most silly comedies. After 10 days, the film has grossed a fantastic $61.6 million and looks to become Martin’s second $100-million hit (after “Parenthood”).

Muniz’s kiddie-CIA comedy “Agent Cody Banks” opened in second place with $15 million, thanks to widespread support among the under-12 set. Its opening figure is just shy of the $16.7 million “Spy Kids 2” earned last summer. But Muniz handily defeated Oscar nominees Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro, whose assassin drama “The Hunted” opened in third place with $13.5 million, apparently hampered a bit by its R rating.

Another R-rated drama, Bruce Willis’ “Tears of the Sun,” dropped a discouraging 48 percent in its second week to $8.8 million, while the musical “Chicago” saw its box office take actually increase 12 percent to $7.7 million, bringing its total up to $125.5 million. Looks like a lot of you wanted to catch the flick before it wins Best Picture at the Oscars this Sunday.
