Eminem is too big for the Oscars. He’s not performing his nominated ”Lose Yourself,” from his movie ”8 Mile,” at Sunday’s ceremony, but then, ”8 Mile” hardly needs the publicity boost. On Tuesday, the DVD hit stores and promptly sold 2 million copies, according to a statement by Universal Studios Home Video. Its $40 million in first-day sales sets a record for both a March DVD release and an R-rated movie.
Not that Eminem didn’t have his own publicty blitz behind the DVD. Radio stations nationwide sponsored freestyle rap contests à la ”8 Mile,” with the winners flown to Detroit for a live performance last weekend by the increasingly reclusive rapper. It also didn’t hurt that the DVD also includes the exclusive release of Slim’s racy new video for the song ”Superman.” Plus, parents could buy the disc for their kids in a censored version as well. At this rate, Eminem could prove as big a seller on DVD as he is on CD.
