As long as there’s not going to be a red carpet at Sunday’s Oscars, many stars are also choosing not to arrive in limousines. In keeping with the spirit of the wartime event, several stars have decided the ideal Oscar arrival vehicle is a little gas-electric hybrid car, the Toyota Prius. The Associated Press reports that Cameron Diaz, Harrison Ford, Susan Sarandon, and Robin Williams plan to arrive in the vehicles, which make a multilayered statement: They’re austere, they’re environmentally friendly, they’re not so dependent on Middle Eastern oil, and they’re discreet enough to allow the stars to arrive at the Kodak Theatre with little fanfare. Of course, they’re still being chauffeured, which means the cars could be idling for several hours during the ceremony.
Other non-traditional cars arriving at the Oscars will be Cadillac sedans. Cadillac, a commercial sponsor of the telecast, is providing 30 cars for Oscar bigwigs. Not as fuel-efficient as a Prius, but not as ostentatious as a stretch limo, either.
Of course, if stars really want to prove that they’re not extravagant, gas-powered, pampered elitists, they could follow the example set by Oscar winner Hilary Swank and husband Chad Lowe a couple years ago, who arrived at the Independent Spirit Awards on their bicycles.
