There’s a new hero in Kirsten Dunst’s life, and it’s not Tobey Maguire… or Jake Gyllenhaal. Variety reports that, in ”Spider-Man 2,” Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson will fall for square-jawed astronaut John Jameson, to be played by Daniel Gillies. Who? He’s a New Zealand-born actor, seen in America on Showtime’s comics-based sci-fi series ”Jeremiah.” He’ll also be smoldering onscreen opposite some other high-profile actresses in upcoming movies: Charlize Theron and Penélope Cruz in the World War II drama ”Head in the Clouds” and Estella Warren in ”Trespassing.” Gillies joins the ”Spider-Man 2” shoot as it goes into production this weekend.
With Maguire’s Peter Parker having suppressed his love for her out of concern for her safety at the end of the first movie, Dunst’s Mary Jane will be free to fall for Gillies’ Jameson, who, in the comic books, is the son of Peter’s boss, Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson. In the comics, John shares his father’s abhorrence of Spider-Man, since he considers himself more of a real hero than the wall-crawler. He also finds a mysterious gem on the moon that transforms him into a character known as Man Wolf. Spider-men, wolf men — that poor Mary Jane can’t catch a break.
