Live Phish Vol. 17

Lead Performer: Phish; Producer (group): Elektra

With near-instant live downloads (see LivePhish.com), this band’s concert-recording culture is now even sicker than the Grateful Dead’s. Here, four more multidisc sets from the vaults. 17 (7/15/98) is kinda average, with some pretty jams and goofy interludes. 18 (5/7/94) has a legendary hour-plus take on the improv-launching ”Tweezer,” incorporating the Who’s ”Sparks,” the Breeders’ ”Cannonball,” Prince’s ”Purple Rain” (with a great vacuum-cleaner solo), and other stuff; it’s as good as this band gets. 19 (7/12/91), with guest blowing by the Giant Country Horns, features two Charlie Parker covers(!). 20 (12/29/94) includes an epic, Frippertronics-flavored ”Bowie.” Help, I’m drowning. 17: B- 18: A- 19: B+ 20:
