Q In Finding Nemo, aquarium lore has it that if someone goes down a sink or toilet drain alive, they could escape to the ocean because, you know, all drains lead to the ocean. Fact or fish tale?
A ”We were given a tour of our local sewage treatment plant,” says Nemo director Andrew Stanton. ”It has happened, albeit very rarely.” But likely never in Sydney, where the movie is set. That city’s sewage goes through a process that would find a fish chewed up and spit out, probably somewhere in the Tasman Sea. Says Alison Davidson of Baltimore’s National Aquarium, ”It’s a pretty inhumane way to go.” (Send queries to BurningQuestions@ew.com)
