What ”American Pie”’s Mena Suvari has been up to
‘PIE’ CHARACTER Heather, the choirgirl who improbably falls for the jock (Klein), only to head off into the sunset with him and live happily ever after. (Suvari doesn’t return for ”Wedding.”)
CLAIM TO FAME Suvari’s ”Pie” portrayal led to her poignant breakout role as the object of Kevin Spacey’s middle-aged fantasies in ”American Beauty” (1999). That her tough-talking cheerleader turned out to be a sweet girl with a mass of hidden sexual insecurities proved Suvari capable of giving a complex take on typical teen fare.
WHAT’S NEXT After returning for ”American Pie 2,” Suvari decided to abandon teen roles entirely in favor of serious dramas like 2002’s drug tale ”Spun.” Although that dark film lacked box office heft, it demonstrated her ability to stretch beyond pretty-blonde parts. Next year she’ll continue the trend in ”Closing the Ring,” with Ryan Phillippe, and ”Trauma,” a thriller costarring Colin Firth.
