The Sea & the Rhythm

Producer (group): Sub Pop

When a singer whispers evocative nouns over gently picked slide guitar, we are conditioned to presume a certain poetic depth. Truth is, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine is just him) doesn’t appear to have much on his mind beyond aggressive minimalism. But this five-song EP is full of gorgeous, intimate melodies, including ”Jesus the Mexican Boy,” about a kid with a ”holy even temper” who doesn’t mind if you marry his sister in Vegas. Don’t look for meaning. Just enjoy the tale.
