It may be the sequel to Pitch Black, but Riddick (in theaters June 11) will have Vin Diesel (and returning director David Twohy) take his antihero far from those feasting aliens and into his past for this first film in what is reported to be a trilogy. Diesel turned his attention from the historical epic Hannibal to give EW the details.

EW How’d Riddick go?

VD I think it went pretty damn special.

EW It sounds like it’s going to be completely different from Pitch Black.

VD Yeah. It’s um — Pitch Black would be The Hobbit to Riddick’s The Lord of the Rings.

EW You clearly have an affection for this character.

VD There’s something cool and something I respect about [playing] a character who was introduced in a subtle way. It wasn’t like, ”Look at this character!!!”

EW [Pause] You played a massive guy who shaves his head with a machete, can see in the dark, and runs with some 400 pounds of weights behind him.

VD [Laughs] You’re right. Okay. My mind is so immersed in Hannibal right now that I guess anything that doesn’t call for 100 elephants comes off as subtle.

EW You passed on 2 Fast 2 Furious. That was a vehicle that could have been — VD [Laughs] This has Judi Dench!

EW Which is to say what?

VD It’s brilliant…. We had a picture framed of her and I standing at the veranda as the city is being sieged by a group of necromongers. [Menacing voice] AN ARMY OF NECROMONGERS.

EW Are you trying to scare me with the Riddick voice?

VD Yeah.
