We gave it a B+

Legend has it Disney withdrew Alice from the 16mm rental circuit in the ’60s after the surreal kid pic became too popular on college campuses, if you catch our whiff. Survivors of that generation can rest assured that Disney’s stunning new Masterpiece Edition looks so mind-bogglingly vivid, a contact high is guaranteed. Outside the counterculture, it’s always been underappreciated; many Disneymaniacs consider it too chilly, manic, and episodic — a perhaps unavoidable response to a story where everyone Alice meets is a schizophrenic. Beaumont (pictured), the heroine’s voice actress and model, tells EW she thinks Alice ”has come into its own because, in terms of fast movement and quick changes, people of that day hadn’t seen that. Now, everything is in fast, short pieces.” In other words, we’re all late for a very important date! EXTRAS Juggling the demands of animation buffs and 5-year-olds, Disney jettisoned some archival extras from the ’95 laserdisc for a Virtual Tea Party destined to bore even tots. Happily, vintage Disney TV clips and a Fred Waring Show salute fill disc 2, where kids can experience firsthand 1951-era entertainment’s generally less mad pace.
