Is there a stage or a screen sturdy enough to handle the combined diva wattage of Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lopez? We’ll find out when ”American Darlings” reaches the multiplex. According to Variety, it’s a musical about two 1940s singers who lead all-girl bands, one white and one made up of black and Latina musicians. While the men go off to war, they integrate their two bands and earn high-profile gigs previously denied them in male-dominated clubs, even facing off in a battle of the bands against Count Basie’s orchestra at Harlem’s Apollo Theater.

”Darlings” has apparently been a pet project of Kidman’s for some time. Not only will the ”Moulin Rouge” star sing again in the film, she is also producing the project, along with ”Chicago” producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. There’s no screenplay yet, much less a shooting date. Given the busy schedules of the two actresses, we’re expecting to see the film reach the screen around 2008.
