Dweezil Zappa & Lisa Loeb list 12 must-have CD’s

VAN HALEN Van Halen 1978 (Warner Bros.) DWEEZIL ”’Eruption’ was the reason that I started playing guitar…. Eddie Van Halen had actually come to my school talent show, and my band was playing ‘Running With the Devil.’ I was playing a wrong chord, so he came up behind me — and the guitar was still strapped over my shoulders — and played the guitar part with the rest of the 12-year-old kids!”

PINK FLOYD The Wall 1979 (Capitol) LISA ”I know Dweezil’s not as big of a fan as I am, but I love the story that it tells. It’s a record that I could listen to over and over again. [Thoughtful pause] I have no idea how I got into it.”

THE BEATLES Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 1967 (Capitol) DWEEZIL ”You can’t not say that you like the Beatles.” LISA ”I especially like ‘Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite.’ I loved songs that were haunting when I was little.”

QUEEN A Night at the Opera 1975 (Hollywood) LISA ”That was another album I started listening to when I was 7 or 8 years old. Each song is like reading a book. Your imagination just bursts wide open listening to the music.”

FRANK ZAPPA Apostrophe 1974 (Rykodisc) DWEEZIL ”I grew up listening to my dad’s music more than anything else. It has a song called ‘St. Alphonzo’s Pancake Breakfast,’ and when you’re a kid, hearing a song about pancakes…well, there’s really nothing cooler.”

DAVID BOWIE The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars 1972 (Virgin) LISA ”You think of it mainly as a rock record — but the songs stand alone if you just sit and play them on a piano or guitar.”

SHERYL CROW Sheryl Crow 1996 (A&M) DWEEZIL ”I really think that Sheryl Crow is tremendous — be it on guitar or just her singing with a bass.”

DAVID BOWIE Hunky Dory 1971 (Virgin) LISA ”These Bowie records are albums that I literally own the vinyl of, the CDS, and the cassette tapes. I don’t have eight-tracks. We missed eight-tracks.”

LED ZEPPELIN Led Zeppelin II 1969 (Atlantic) DWEEZIL ”You just can’t beat ‘Heartbreaker.”’

THE WHO Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy 1971 (MCA) LISA ”Oh, my Lord. Such a great record. It’s got a great sense of humor.”

MICHAEL HEDGES Aerial Boundaries 1985 (Windham Hill) DWEEZIL ”He can make his acoustic guitar sound like an orchestra.”

THE POLICE Outlandos d’Amour 1978 (A&M) LISA ”I was obsessed with the Police growing up. This is really cheesy to say, but I loved their energy.”

Dweezil Zappa and Lisa Loeb’s cooking show airs Fridays on Food Network.
