Genre: Fiction; Author: Bill Fitzhugh

Fitzhugh’s darkly comic novels aren’t really mysteries so much as social lampoons, and his newest hits hard at a soft target: FM rock radio. His tale of Rick Shannon, a graying DJ who takes a job in small-town Mississippi, is both implausible and drolly funny – you’ve got to love a guy who solves a double homicide, redefines the classic-rock format, and finds semi-true love before his first paycheck. So what if Fitzhugh works too many song titles into the text? He wins major points for gall, describing a tornado ripping off a carport as ”a tremulous, keening screech reminiscent of a Yoko [Ono] record.”
